Adderall sits in an awkward place: it is a genuinely effective, well-evidenced treatment for ADHD, and it is also one of the most widely misused prescription drugs on college campuses and in high-pressure workplaces. Both facts matter, and confusing them does real damage — people with ADHD get treated as suspects, and people misusing stimulants get told it is harmless because it comes in a pill.
Axis Mental Health provides outpatient substance use and mental health treatment from Desert Hot Springs, California, serving the Coachella Valley, Riverside County and the wider Southern California region. Our care includes individual and group therapy, psychiatric medication management, dual-diagnosis treatment for co-occurring mental health conditions, and telehealth appointments anywhere in California.
We are an outpatient provider. We do not operate a medical detox or residential unit. If your assessment shows you need that level of care first, we will help you find a licensed program and pick your treatment up again the moment you step down.

Adderall is a mixture of amphetamine salts. It increases dopamine and norepinephrine in the brain, primarily by driving their release and blocking reuptake. Related stimulants include:
Approved for ADHD and, for some formulations, narcolepsy and binge eating disorder. All are Schedule II controlled substances.
Worth stating plainly: properly prescribed and monitored stimulant treatment for ADHD is associated with better outcomes, including lower rates of substance use problems later in life, not higher. Treating ADHD is protective.
Misuse means taking a stimulant in a way it was not prescribed:
The “study drug” belief deserves a direct answer: in people without ADHD, stimulants reliably increase wakefulness and the subjective sense of productivity, and the research does not show meaningful gains in learning, comprehension or grades. You feel more effective. The output usually is not better.
Physical: weight loss and appetite suppression, insomnia, dilated pupils, elevated heart rate and blood pressure, dry mouth, teeth grinding, headaches, tremor, excessive sweating, in some people hair thinning and skin problems.
Psychological and behavioral: irritability and mood swings, anxiety and panic, escalating doses, running out early, obtaining pills from other people, “borrowing” from friends’ prescriptions, feeling unable to function or face work without it, paranoia or suspiciousness, and at high doses stimulant-induced psychosis with hallucinations and delusions.
The crash is often the clearest tell: profound fatigue, depressed mood, excessive sleep and voracious hunger when the drug wears off or runs out — then re-dosing to escape it.
Stimulant withdrawal is not medically dangerous the way alcohol or benzodiazepine withdrawal is, but it is psychologically punishing and is where relapse happens.
Depressive symptoms during stimulant withdrawal can include suicidal thoughts. This is a genuine risk period and a reason not to do it entirely alone. If that is where you are, call or text 988.
There is no FDA-approved medication for stimulant use disorder, so the evidence sits with behavioral treatment — and it is stronger than most people assume:
Axis Mental Health provides ADHD evaluation, psychiatric medication management, individual and group therapy, and dual-diagnosis treatment on an outpatient basis, in person in Desert Hot Springs and by telehealth across California.
Taken as prescribed and monitored, the risk of developing a use disorder is low, and treating ADHD appears to reduce later substance use problems. Risk rises when doses escalate outside the prescription, when the route changes, or when it is used for performance rather than symptoms.
They are chemically related — methamphetamine has an extra methyl group that lets more of it cross into the brain faster, producing a far more intense effect and greater neurotoxicity. Route matters at least as much: a controlled oral dose of prescribed amphetamine is pharmacologically very different from smoking or injecting meth.
It keeps you awake and makes you feel more productive. Controlled studies do not show real gains in learning, comprehension or grades in people without ADHD. You are buying alertness and confidence, not performance.
The crash lasts a few days. Low mood, low motivation and poor concentration typically improve over two to four weeks, with craving fading over a few months. Depression persisting beyond that needs to be assessed as depression in its own right.
Yes, and that is usually the right approach. Treating the ADHD properly — sometimes with non-stimulants, sometimes with structured stimulant treatment under tight monitoring — removes much of the reason people escalate on their own.
